First Annual Tattoo Fest Asheville NC March 15 - 18 2012

The first annual Tattoo Fest in Asheville, NC, March 16-18, 2012, will be held at the downtown Renaissance Hotel. I confess, I know very little about tattoos and don't even have a tattoo, but this sounds like lots and lots of fun and bound to be totally amazing.

The Tattoo Fest officially opens on Thursday March 15 at 8:00 pm in the extraordinary "Top of the Plaza" at the top of the Renaissance Hotel, just after early set-up for the Artists and Vendors. The Festival will continue daily thereafter at the Renaissance from 11 am to midnight, Friday March 16, Saturday March 17, and Sunday March18th.

The hotel itself has wonderful conference facilities and is within walking distance to bars, nightclubs, restaurants, shopping and art galleries.

Tattooing will be in two rooms of the hotel - the Grand Ballroom and the Windsor Ballroom; there will be live tattooing by top artists from around the world, live music, seminars, competitions, prizes, not to mention, Custom Car and Bike Show (in the Renaissance Parking Lot), The Cut Throat Freak Show, Scavenger Hunt, After Parties, Art Walk, live celebrity appearances, children's activities, and much more! Several of the seminars are free and open to the public, so be sure and check the schedule.

Tattoo contest's begin at 4:00 pm daily during the conference. Register to enter a tattoo contest of your choice and liking! $10 per category - tattoo contests are open to anyone. The Biltmore Estate in Winter in Asheville NC

There are many fantastic reasons to visit The Biltmore Estate anytime of the year and while winter might not seem like the best time, we beg to differ. If you enjoy discounted prices, incredible views that only winter can offer, low crowds and time to take in the stories and history, winter is one of the best times to visit The Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC and the Western NC Mountains.

Plan your visit at least 7 days in advance and buy your tickets online, saving $10 off the $45 winter ticket price (Biltmore daytime passes the rest of the year are $60 and up).

Or, for an even better bargain, stay in a nearby partner bed and breakfast or Asheville Vacation Rental and get your winter daytime tickets for $39 each, good for two consecutive days of entry. Additionally, all winter through March 31st, add an Audio Tour to your walk through the House for free (usually $10 each audio tour) and soak up the history and stories of the sights as you see them - and without bustling crowds pushing you through the house. Youth 10 to 16 are also free during the winter season, usually $30 each youth ticket (children 9 and younger free year-round).

The Estate lies on 8,000 acres at the confluence of the Swanannoa and French Broad rivers, with many stunning westerly views of Mount Pisgah (an Asheville, NC landmark) and the Western NC Mountains, just off I-40 at exit 50, bordering historic Biltmore Village of Asheville and just 3 miles south of Asheville's historic downtown.

A best kept secret, in my opinion, are the trails in and around the 8,000 acres. I love to park in the parking area behind the Conservatory, just below the House (*hint* this parking lot can look full when it isn't, as it expands further back into a larger graveled parking area past the paved area).

Step into the warmth of the Conservatory on a cold winter day! The Orchid Room is a favorite spot. The outdoor gardens in front of the conservatory are often grey and empty as they are getting prepared for the Festival of Flowers that begins in early April every year. But walking is so enjoyable even in the dormancy of the gardens. The trails around the Bass Pond are easy to find from the Conservatory. Additionally, one of my favorite trails is the Deer Park Trail. Walk up to the back veranda of the Biltmore House and go out the gate at the far end to find a trail map and hook up to the Deer Park Trail for hours of walking and sights and scenes that most other guests choose not to see. And, you won't find safer trails to hike on in Western NC.

The Winery and Antler Hill Village are always fun, interesting, and yes even relaxing, with low key activities for the whole family, and easy places to stop, rest and relax. All of the Antlert Hill farm, barn and village and the winery are included in your ticket price and a basic wine tasting is free (they have grapejuice for kids, too!). If you wish, you can upgrade your wine tasting for a broader wine tasting experience and souvenir. The Bistro restaurant and a wonderful gift shop are attached to the Winery for your shopping and dining pleasure.

Antler Hill Village, farm and animal barn are a newer addition to the estate. Shops encircle a "square" at Antler Hill Village and most weekends a small band will be playing in the Gazebo on the green. Cedric's Restaurant is on the square. A few steps away is the Barn, often (esp on weekends) with turn of the century demonstrations of farm type activities, such as blacksmithing, butter making, ice-cream making, spinning wool, and so forth. Arts and crafts activities and "old timey" games are also often available, making the grassy area in the middle of the old barn an extremely relaxing place to take the kids. The open animal barn is further afield, but not too far, and worth the visit to see and touch farm animals. The chickens and rabbits are always a favorite of mine. Professional docents are often available to demonstrate and explain various uses of the animals on a farm of the turn of the 20th century.

Asheville Chef's from 26 area restaurants and counting will be showcasing their cuisine and talent, in historic downtown Asheville, Biltmore Village, North Asheville, South Asheville and other area locations. 5th Annual Winter Warmer Beer Festival, January 21 2012, Asheville Civic Center

I know it's still Christmas, but the Winter Warmer Beer Festival is coming up in January in Asheville, NC, nestled in the lovely Western North Carolina Mountains - start planning now!! And how great is it to visit Asheville when the crowds are down a bit? Very great! Looking for a gift for that Beer lover in your family? What a unique and special idea!! The 5th annual Winter Warmer Beer Festival will be on January 21, 2012 from 3-7 pm, at the Asheville Civic Center on the Exhibition Hall level (accessed from Hiawassee Street in Downtown Asheville). Brewing participants are from a variety of areas in the Southeast, mostly from North Carolina Breweries, but also from South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.

Asheville Christmas - Lighting on the Green at A-B Tech

A-B Technical College's "Fernihurst" will host the second annual Lighting of the Green for delightful Asheville Christmas Activities, open and free to the public. Fernihurst was once the center of the township Victoria, which is now in a downtown Asheville neighborhood atop a knoll on Victoria Road, in the midst of Asheville-Buncombe Technical College (A-B Tech) and home to the Brumit Center for Culinary Arts and Hospitality.

Colonel John Kerr Connally and his wife Alice Thomas Connally built Fernihurst in 1876 and named it after the Kerr castle in Scotland. Entertainment did abound in the heyday of Fernihurst and the Connally's hosted as many as 500 guests, including the Vanderbilt family. Urban legend has it that when George Vanderbilt first saw the Fernihurst Manor and its views, he immediately attempted to buy it; when he was turned down by the Connallys, he purchased all the land on either side of the Swanannoa and French Broad Rivers (the property which is now home to the Biltmore Estate) and bought the property neighboring Fernihurst. Later, Sunnicrest was built next to Fernihurst by the Vanderbilts, and today the two homes are connected by a breezeway and are both part of the Brumit Center for Culinary Arts and Hospitality.

The Culinary center at AB Tech trains student chefs and restaurant managers; one may even reserve a dinner to be served there by the students, allegedly excellent dining! The Lighting of the Green will show off Fernihurst decked in Christmas finery and lights. The area will be lit now through the 20th of December (when the campus closes for the Holiday). Fernihurst will be open and is free to the public for special events and tours on Tuesdays and Fridays, December 13 through 20th from 6-8 pm, so a great time to get a free peek at Fernihurst and enjoy light snacks, leisurely tours, crafts for the children and delightful local family friendly entertainment:

National Gingerbread House Competition, Historic Grove Park Inn, Asheville NC

Enjoy viewing the entries of the National Gingerbread House Competition at the Historic Grove Park Inn in Asheville NC this Holiday season. 2011 marks the 19th year for this delightful annual contest. Viewing is from November 16, 2011 to January 1 2012 throughout the halls and lobbies of the Grove Park Inn and is free to visitors and resort guests alike. Community days are Sunday through Thursday and Resort Guests may view the display at anytime. The gingerbread display and amazing holiday decorations throughout the halls and grand lobby are sure to get you in the mood for the Christmas Season!

Sunday afternoons from 1-3 pm, current and past winners share their stories; and allow the opportunity to meet and mingle with the Gingerbread "superstars."

Additionally, there are "Stories of Gingerbread" guided tours. The hour-long tours are Wednesday through Sunday at 9 am and 3 pm now through January 1 2012. Tours are $12 each adult, $6 each child 12 and younger. Advance reservations are required and may be made by calling 800 438 5800.

Some fun facts about the competition! There are four age level categories to enter: Adult (18 years old and older), Teen (13 - 17 years old), Youth (9 - 12 years old) and child (5-8 years old). A professional panel judges the entries and the judging is based on overall appearance, originality/creativity, difficulty, precision and consistency of theme. The entries must be constructed entirely of edible materials (except for the base). Size may not exceed 2 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2 feet tall. More than $12,000 in cash prizes are awarded and the grand prize winner received a $3000 cash prize and a 2 night Club Floor stay for 2 at the Grove Park Inn (so get your plans entry ready for next year!!).

Thanksgiving, in Asheville, NC

Thanksgiving week in Asheville, NC and things to do. Yes, many restaurants and shops will be closed on Thanksgiving day itself, but lots will be open. Following are a few options for the week, weekend and Thanksgiving Day.

Most restaurants, shops and activities will be open on Wednesday and Friday of Thanksgiving week, and a few will be open on Thanksgiving Day itself.

The Biltmore Estate will be open on Thanksgiving Day, although no Candlelight tours will be available that evening. In spite of no candlelight tour, it should be a wonderful day to visit the Biltmore Estate, grounds and winery as the crowds will be a bit down (expect it to be very crowded on the Friday after Thanksgiving day). Restaurants on the Estate grounds will be open, including the Deerpark Inn, with traditional Thanksgiving fare (reservations required, 828 225-6260).

Other restaurants in town and in the area reported to be open for Thanksgiving Day dinner include the Grove Park Inn, Grand Bohemian Hotel, Hotel Indigo Hotel's 151 Boutique Bar & Kitchen, Restaurant Solace, Packs Tavern, Olive or Twist and more. If you decide to have lunch or dinner at the Grove Park Inn, be sure and visit the Gingerbread House exhibit!

For entertainment, most venues will be closed on Thanksgiving Day itself but look for lots to do on Wednesday and again on Friday and through the weekend.

Holiday Peanut Brittle - YUM!

Here's one of my favorite quick and easy holiday recipes, this one is fun to do with the children (and grown-ups, too!) and makes a great gift:

Peanut Brittle makes a wonderful Christmas treat or holiday gift. It is so easy to find fun containers, either old ones to re-use and recycle, or inexpensive new ones, for fun and easy gift packaging.

Holiday Peanut Brittle:
Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup (or less) of peanuts, pecans or walnuts

Instructions:
This is so easy you will never buy peanut brittle again! Melt the sugar in a skillet on medium heat, stirring constantly (if the heat is too high, the sugar will end up with a little bit of a burned flavor). As it melts, the sugar will become more and more crumbly. Keep stirring until all the "crumbles" are melted. Once the sugar has completely melted, stir in the butter and your choice of nuts. While hot, pour onto a greased cookie pan, 8X12 or larger (one with a rim, not a sheet), allowing the mixture to spread out over the sheet. Let cool. Break into pieces.

Bicycling the Blue Ridge Parkway from the Historic Brigman House, Asheville, NC

For all you cycling enthusiasts, the Historic Brigman House (on the National Historic Register), offers exceptional biking options on the Blue Ridge Parkway and other backcountry roads of the area. For the more ambitious cyclist, simply roll right our the front door onto scenic Reems Creek Road and in 1 mile turn onto Ox Creek Road. A beautiful rural valley road that gently rolls in the first couple of miles and then starts uphill for a very challenging 3 mile climb, ending at the Blue Ridge ParkwayDuring the Tour DuPont (cycling stage race held in the US between 1991 and 1996), the climb up Ox Creek Road often decided the actual winner of the Tour's queen stage ending in downtown Asheville.

Once at the Blue Ridge Parkway, one can head north for 25 miles and the epic ascent of Mt. Mitchell (highest peak east of the Mississippi), or continue going north towards scenic Little Switzerland and Linville Gorge. No matter how far one chooses to go, cycling the Blue Ridge Parkway is an absolute treat!

Or turn south on the Parkway at the Ox Creek junction and in a couple of miles take a right onto scenic hwy 694 (Asheville's Town Mountain Road). This beautiful road travels along a distinct ridge that ends by descending into downtown Asheville in approximately 6 miles. Take your bike into the center of Asheville and enjoy an expresso or latte at one of the many coffee houses found around town before you head back - or have your buddies come and pick you up!

Special note of interest, there are several trailheads at the Ox Creek/BRP junction and all along the BRP for those of you wishing to hike - the Ox Creek junction of the BRP "white dot" or "Mountains-to-Sea Trail" has recently been renamed to be the "Obama Trailhead" in honor of the Obama's as this is where Barack and Michelle Obama hiked on their vacation to Asheville North Carolina one May. And if motor-touring is more to your taste, Reems Creek Road, Ox Creek Road, Town Mountain Road and the Blue Ridge Parkway are a delight in your car or on your motorcycle as well.

Asheville International Children's Film Festival

The third annual Asheville International Children's Film Festival will be held November 4-13th in the Asheville area of Western North Carolina and is the largest children's film festival in the Southeast. Festival venues include Asheville Pizza and Brewing, Earth Fare, Posana Cafe, The Lab (all in Asheville city limits) and the Tryon Theater in Tryon, NC. Events are scheduled over the 10 day period at the various venues. The feature film is "The Crocodiles Strike Back." There are seven short block films: "Family Matters," "Round the World and Home Again," "Legends Come Alive," "All Creatures Great & Small," Tally Ho! The festival is for ages 3 to adult with the goal of using film media "to stimulate critical thinking and promote intelligent dialogue through the introduction of passionate and provocative cinematic works."

Fall Backpacking in Asheville and Western NC

Fall is a wonderful time for backpacking, hiking or visiting Asheville and Western NC. Fall foliage is amazing and with weather that is typically a bit dryer and cooler, views are even more amazing (and summer crowds are down - but watch out for hunters & the various hunting seasons - wear bright orange clothing!). Many short hikes will take you to beautiful vistas, backpacking campsites - some with shelters. And, if you do not care to backpack, many out and back trails or loop trails in the area will be enough! Asheville is known for it's bed and breakfast accommodations and cabin and vacation rentals. Hiking in the area is the best way to really enjoy the fall splendor.

Fall Foliage Is Here In Asheville, NC

Fall is in the air in Asheville, NC and the stunning colors are beginning to burst through and take over the rich greens of summer. Maples are turning golds and oranges, Hickorys a bold yellow, the Virginia Creeper a rich red. Leaf blowers (and maybe a few rakes) are going full blast for front yard leaf piles and play. Up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Fall is in it's full splendor, so it's time to bring yourself to Asheville and check out the show!

We've harvested our two pumpkins from the garden and they now adorn the front porch of Oakland Cottage B&B as we decorate for the fall harvest and Halloween!

Spectacular Hikes in Western North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Parkway

One of the most spectacular hikes in Western North Carolina is just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, beginning off the spur road that goes into the Black Balsam and Sam's Knob parking area at mile post marker 420.

The trail section referenced here follows along part of the Art Loeb trail and into the Shining Rock Wilderness area. The trail as we talk about it here is out and back so may be as long or as short as one wishes to make it or has time for. Spectacular scenery begins soon after the hike begins, about 1/4 mile up the trail.

For those hiking with pets, there is not a lot of water along the trail, but small springs are scattered here and there every few miles. There are also several springs that are obviously used by hikers to filter or treat as a water source, especially around the actual Shining Rock area. Once on this part of the Blue Ridge Parkway, elevations begin around 5000 feet above sea level, so bring extra clothes, layers and hats, even in many summer months. You will notice a big difference in the flora and fauna at this elevation as well, making the area and hike all the more striking, interesting and beautiful.

There are two places to start this section of the Art Loeb Trail. I prefer starting at the obvious trail head about 1/4 mile in on the paved spur road (off the Blue Ridge Parkway at MPM 420) on the right side of the road. This is such a popular section, there are almost always other cars parked there. There is also a larger parking area another 1/2 mile further down this spur road and where the Ivester Gap Trail and old fire road merges. There is a pit toilet at this parking area and several other fantastic hikes begin from this parking area as well.

From the first trailhead referenced above, you will climb up and turn left hiking up through a forest of Black Balsam trees. After a fairly short hike, you will break through the trees, continuing up hill to the first bald and quickly out into the open at high elevation to take in breathtaking 360 degree views.

The trail is open and very exposed most of the way, so watch the weather and bring sunscreen. There are rough and rocky sections, but because the start of the hike is at a fairly high elevation point to begin with (especially for the Eastern US), there are little ups and downs from mountain top to gap, but really not that much elevation change, especially compared to other hikes. Balds you will cross include Black Balsam Knob, Tennent Mountain and more. We hiked 5 miles out to The Shining Rock and back for a 10 plus mile roundtrip hike, all day for us. And the hike can take you all the way to Cold Mountain (yes, the Cold Mountain referenced in the book "Cold Mountain") for a longer adventure. Make it as short or as long as you like, turning around at whatever point you reach. This is a popular place to hike into for even just a mile and watch the sunset. There are amazing views of Looking Glass Rock, Graveyard Fields and parts of the ribbon of The Blue Ridge Parkway. All breathtaking with sweeping views!

Navitat Canopy Adventures are a lot of fun and the one near Asheville, NC is a top notch operation. It is just shy of an easy 30 minute drive from Oakland Cottage B&B and Asheville, NC. Wonderful staff, extremely professional and in a beautiful setting; from start to finish, allow for a 4 hour adventure in the beautiful hardwood forests of the Western North Carolina Appalachian Mountains.

To begin the adventure, settle in for your 15 minute safety briefing and harness fitting with your guides for the day. You and up to 7 other participants will then be driven up the side of the mountain via a Gator where you will be dropped off for your first lesson on how to brake and steady yourself as you zip from tree to tree, platform to platform.

Once up in the trees, the setting is completely in the wilderness - no other buildings or construction are within view during the entire event - and groups are spaced evenly over the 10 ziplines, 2 bridges, 2 rappels and 3 short hikes. And while it is scary at times, it is also wonderfully relaxing to be in and among the trees. The ziplines are of varying length, the longest ones are quite amazing, the construction of the decks, views, people you meet, beautiful trees in which all is built and the wonderful guides, all add to the amazing experience of Navitat, Asheville NC.

Waterfall Hikes Along the Blue Ridge Parkway - Skinny Dip Falls

There are many wonderful waterfall hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway - and Skinny Dip Falls is one of my favorites, with easy access from Asheville, NC, just 1/2 mile or less off the Blue Ridge Parkway at MPM 417.

You won't likely find any skinny dippers and you might get some funny looks if you skinny dip, but that's what this delightful swimming hole is named. And what a wonderful and sweet little spot.

How to get there. From Asheville, NC, take the Blue Ridge Parkway - get on at the NC Arboretum (MPM 393) and 191 junction. 11 tunnels between this junction and the trail head to Skinny Dip Falls, make this section of the Parkway quite fun and interesting to drive along. At MPM 417 and the Looking Glass Rock overlook, pull off and park here. From this pullout, first, take in the impressive view of Looking Glass Rock, a prominent and special feature of the area - one of the many granite domes that bubbled up who knows how many millions of years ago and created the many similar & unique granite features of the Western NC mountains. Then you'll notice a trail head across the road - access to the "White Dot" or Mountains to Sea Trail. Take this trail and shortly, go up a few rough steps and take a left - the White Dot trail will branch off to the right. The trail is rough but easy going and fairly short to the overlook of Skinny Dip Falls - a quarter to half mile distance total from the parking area to the falls. You'll find a set of steps down a serious set of wooden stairs to a bridge across the creek, which allows for easy access to this great swimming hole, complete with jumping rock. The pool is small but probably 5 feet deep - enough to enjoy a good jump or two (or three!). There is another swimming hole below the first with a very cool channel between the rocks. Swim up this channel to a cascade for a little spa treatment in the woods (haha)! The water is cold and quite refreshing on a hot summer day. Exploring up the creek is fun and interesting with lots of cascading a - just watch your footing and be careful in your explorations.

Visiting The Biltmore Estate is Much More Than Inside the "House"

Visiting The Biltmore Estate is much more than just seeing the inside of the "house," and a "must do," in my opinion. It is not an inexpensive ticket, but well worth the price if you take advantage of all there is to do, and many B&Bs in the area offer discount tickets good for two consecutive days of entry or great room packages that might include extra savings.

Besides touring the inside of the amazing Estate, the grounds are immense and offer so much more of interest Walking through the "conservatory," walking trails to and around The Bass Pond, picnicking in "The Lagoon" area (with a fantastic view of the Estate), new Antler Hill Village and The Winery are all additional things to do and part of the day pass. Extras may also be purchased - from simple upgrades such as audio tours ($10), roof-top tours, to added adventures, including horseback riding, whitewater rafting, Segway tours and carriage rides. AND, the Estate grounds are pet friendly - Fido can't go in the house, but the grounds are perfect for walking your dog.

Go prepared to make a day or two of it and relax with your visit - don't just think of it as a visit to see the inside of the House. Take your time strolling through the very interesting conservatory (Green House) with interesting plants, water features and gardens. The Rose Gardens are beautiful, Festival of Flowers is a treat every April and May, and the trails down and around to the Bass Pond are quite enjoyable with many plants labeled along the way. Olmstead, landscape architect for Central Park of New York City, was also the landscape architect for the Biltmore Estate.

Pack a picnic lunch and blanket and enjoy fantastic views of the Biltmore Estate from The Lagoon area down by the French Broad River - take a frisbee and enjoy a little free play with the kids. If you are wanting extra exercise, a paved trail begins at the Lagoon area and follows the road to the Winery and Antler Hill Village area - for a mile or two of walking, jogging or even biking (must pay $5 to bicycle on the grounds and sign a waiver first - in the Antler Hill Village area). You might see a Segway Tour or Carriage Tour pass by while you enjoy your picnic!

Antler Hill Village is a real treat on weekends, with a band at the Gazebo, and special engaging demonstrations at the upper Barn, such as ice-cream making, butter making, wool or rabbit yarn making, blacksmith demonstrations, arts and crafts activities for the kids (and adults!) and more. Old fashioned games, such as bean bag toss, hoola-hoop, hoop and stick, frisbees, are always available in the center of the grassy area at the upper barn - a great place to just enjoy watching the kids play while you enjoy a bit of shade - and there is an ice-cream shop here for a great afternoon treat. Wander down to the Animal barn to see and pet the chickens, goats, horses, rabbits and more. You might also see a Segway Tour in progress, as they introduce Segway skills by the barn and begin the tours here.

The Winery is right by Antler Hill Village and wine tasting is included in your day ticket. You may also upgrade your wine tasting ticket to a premier tasting if you like and they have grape juice tasting available for the kids.

Make a day or two of your visit, relax and enjoy a slower pace. There are many lodging options in the area, many within 1 or two miles of the entrance. Or, stay at The Hotel right on the property.

Asheville Trolley Tour - The Grayline is the RED Trolley

The Grayline Tour is the RED Trolley

The Asheville Trolley Tour is a wonderful way to get a good overview and introduction to Asheville (and have a great deal of fun in the process), especially if you need to limit your walking or if the weather is not so great.

I prefer the Grayline (RED trolley). The drivers are chock-full of very interesting history, anecdotal stories and yarns which they rattle off to riders as they tour through the historic city blocks of downtown, historic nearby neighborhoods, the rough and tumble River Arts District and charming Biltmore Village. And while the ticket to The Thomas Wolfe Museum is only $1.00 per visit anyway, this museum ticket is also included in the trolley tour ticket price!

Trolley Tour tickets are good for 2 consecutive days. You may get on and off as often as you like and for as long as you like, allowing for a lunch break at a quaint cafe, dessert at one of the chocolate lounges, a stroll through the Thomas Wolfe Museum and/or shopping in a variety of areas - as you get on and off throughout the two days.

My favorite stops - The Grove Park Inn. Easy to miss are the Grovewood Galleries just across the "lane" and behind the Grove Park Inn... the car museum is small but worth popping into (and free) and several galleries are a delight to browse through - fantastic Arts and Craft works of the area (it's like being in a museum of fine arts), enjoy the sweet "wind garden" along the sidewalk or pop into an often open working art studio and observe an artist at work, blowing glass. The cafe at the Grovewood Galleries is quaint. And, the Grove Park Inn is worth going into and touring as well... be sure and ask to go "up the chimney" elevator! And if it is during Christmas Season, be sure and check out the Gingerbread House display. It's always bustling in the amazing foyer, and the hallways are full of historic memorabilia, including the largest Arts & Crafts style era furniture collection and "famous people" gallery.

Another favorite stop of mine is The River Arts District, which also has working artist studios to visit - view artists at work (and of course, buy their amazing arts!); and while a bit rougher around the edges, the "edginess" also lends a festive feel to the River Arts District. Be sure and eat at 12 Bones across from the Curve Galleries, have a beer at The Wedge, and/or coffee and a patissere at Clingman Cafe.

You just need to have the trolley stop schedule in your hands and plan where to start... I like starting at the Visitor Center on Montford with free parking - and the Visitor Center is a really exceptional and helpful Visitor Center; but you may start and end your tour at any one of the many delightful stops.

Arts & Crafts Conference at The Grove Park Inn, Asheville, NC February 18-19, 2011

For more than 20 years an Arts & Crafts Conference has been held each year at the Grove Park Inn in the mountains of Asheville, NC and will occur again this year beginning on Friday February 18, 2011. If you are passionate about the Arts and Crafts Movement, this is the conference for you. As the New York Times stated: "[The Conference is] the most important weekend of the year for Arts and Crafts Collectors."

Bruce Johnson founded the conference in 1988 and continues to be the Conference Director. With a focus on education, the 3 day conference is usually a sell-out with over 1,500 attendees, featuring 3 selling shows, the Arts & Crafts Antiques show, the Contemporary Craftfirms Show and the Books, Magazines and More show. There will be 8 major seminars, small group discussions and 125 exhibitors. Dealers not only show their wares, they also present lectures and lead small group discussions, sharing their knowledge with attendees from novice to veteran collectors. MLK weekend in Asheville

Snow is surely melting, the sun is shining and the roads are quite clear and passable for this MLK weekend in Asheville. You might just see a few snowmen (snowwomen, snowpeople, snowfamilies, snowpets!) as you drive or walk around town. Along with sledding and building snowmen, there's lots to do in Asheville this January.

The Biltmore Estate looks spectacular in the snow and it isn't crowded at all, so a wonderful time to visit the Estate. Many lodging venues offer discounted Biltmore Tickets January through March.

The Civic Center's Thomas Wolf Auditorium has lots of fun going on this month. Robert Plant will be playing at the Civic Center on Monday night, January 18th. Warm up with beer at the Warmer Winter Beer Festival on January 22nd and laughter on the 23rd with a Bill Cosby Concert. Find a cozy place to stay nearby, many delightful options are within minutes of the Civic Center and beyond.
